02:10Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo underlined her country's wish to join BRICS 'at an appropriate time', speaking on the sidelines of the Eurasian Women’s Forum in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.
"I know that Uganda is not yet a member of BRICS, but from the time of its inception we have been invited and we have participated. My president [Yoweri Museveni] has clearly stated that at an appropriate time, Uganda, they wish to join the BRICS," Alupo said.
She added that Russia and Uganda had "very long standing co-operation" in her country's struggle for 'liberation'.
Uganda’s vice president also said that the women’s forum was very important for her as it gave the opportunity to "share experiences with the women from across the world" and demonstrates that women’s 'desires, interests, and role in governance' are internationally recognised.
"This forum has given us a platform to speak out what we think, the direction the world should take in terms of technology, in terms of involving the girl children, also the women, to work together with men for the good of humanity," she added.
The IV Eurasian Women’s Forum takes place in St. Petersburg on September 18-20. It is reportedly the largest international platform for discussing the role of women in modern society.
