Description

A pre-flight press conference for the main and backup crews of the Expedition 72, which is the 72nd long-duration expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), was held on Thursday at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre (CTC) in Star City, Zvezdny Gorodok in the Moscow Region.

"According to the ISS flight programme, the Soyuz MS-26 manned transport spacecraft is scheduled for launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome on the 11th of September 2024. The planned duration of the ISS-72 crew is 202 days," said Dmitri Zhukov, head of the CTC press service.

Roscosmos cosmonaut Ivan Wagner said he felt great responsibility ahead of the upcoming flight.

"It's like a cocktail of responsibility because you've been given a very responsible job to do. You don't want to fail, especially after all the hard work you've put in to get to this point. And on top of all that, you've got overload, vibrations, and so on. All this cocktail of emotions is brewing in your head," he explained.

Crew captain Alexei Ovchinin added that the team's mission is to 'conduct 42 experimental procedures' while on the ISS, including "medical, biomedical and remote sensing of the Earth, as well as photography of the Earth's surface from space".

The crew will travel to the ISS aboard a Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on September 11. The crew consists of Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexei Ovchinin, Sergei Ryzhikov, Ivan Wagner and Alexei Zubritsky, as well as NASA astronauts Donald Pettit and Jonathan Kim.
