Description

The '10 Lakes' retro rally and classic car exhibition got revved up and raring to go at the 'Igora Drive' racetrack in Priozersk district, Leningrad region on Saturday.

Footage shows competitors driving their vintage cars around the track, as hundreds of car enthusiasts and owners gathered for the open-air exhibition of legendary Soviet and foreign retro cars.

"We have three classes represented: these are veterans, old timers (over 30), young timers (20-30 years old) - and also modern cars," said rally director Alexander Terentyev, who added that 40 vehicles took part in the actual racing.

"The most interesting cars are, of course, the older ones - the veterans. Here I would like to mention the wonderful Volkswagen Ghia and the Saab 93B," Terentyev continued.

One of the rally participants, Matvei Romo, drove a Mercedes-Benz 190SL around the track. He said it was a great opportunity not only to take part in the race, but also to spend time with friends and meet other fans.

"We have wonderful weather, lots of really beautiful, stunning cars and equally interesting people. <...> We try to develop and instil the passion for cars in more enthusiasts," he said.

Dating back to 1990, the '10 Lakes' rally follows the picturesque roads of the Karelian Isthmus, which is more than 100 kilometres long. Car crews - consisting of the driver and navigator - also race around the 'Igora Drive', perform sprints at the 'Igora' resort, and finish up at the 'Orekh' Country Club for the end of the rally.
