Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised Caracas' interest in BRICS during a meeting with Venezuelan counterpart Ivan Gil Pinto on the sidelines of the BRICS Ministerial Council in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
"We support Venezuela's interest in BRICS. As the chair, we will contribute to the strengthening of relations. Our countries have a longstanding history of strong relations. We have effectively collaborated in various areas such as energy, medicine, agriculture, and high technology. Notably, at this crucial juncture, we are in the process of establishing financial and logistical mechanisms that are resilient to external influence, ensuring the independence and progressive development of our ties, particularly in the face of illegitimate actions, primarily by Washington and its allies," Lavrov said.
In response, Gil Pinto expressed gratitude for the invitation to participate in the BRICS Ministerial Council meeting and emphasised Venezuela's eagerness to join the bloc.
"It is a great honour and an invaluable opportunity for us to convey Venezuela's earnest desire to join this significant bloc, which is steadfastly working towards establishing a new world order founded on solidarity, complementarity, and the collective well-being of our peoples," the diplomat said.
The BRICS Ministerial Council meeting is scheduled for June 10-11.
According to the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting will focus on the prospects of multifaceted cooperation during Russia's BRICS chairmanship in three main areas: politics and security, economy and finance, and humanitarian ties.
Since January 1, 2024, Russia has held the BRICS chairmanship, and during this period, several countries, including Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Egypt, have joined the organisation.
