Description

Armenia’s Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the 'Tavush for the Homeland' opposition movement, and hundreds of his supporters gathered at Sardarapat Memorial in Armavir province for Republic Day on Tuesday.

Footage shows Armenian opposition supporters singing the national anthem and holding flares, while Galstanyan can be seen addressing the crowd.

"We must not make mistakes on our path, we must walk the same road that those who are already gone have walked," the archbishop can be heard saying during his address.

Earlier, Gurgen Melikyan, one of the leaders of the 'Tavush for the Homeland’ movement, said that the organisation had nominated Galstanyan for the post of Prime Minister of Armenia.

Reports say the rally was organised by the Archbishop, who is head of the Tavush Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC).

On May 10, Galstanyan indicated that factions from the opposition Armenia Alliance and I Have Honour Alliance parties would initiate impeachment proceedings against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

That follows the announcement by the Armenian Foreign Ministry on April 19 that it would cede territory to Baku, including four villages in Tavush Province - Baghanis Ayrum, Ashaghi Askipara, Kheyrimli and Ghizilhajili.

Capital Yerevan was rocked by mass demonstrations in early May, as protesters demanded that Pashinyan step down and the border delimitation deal with neighbouring Azerbaijan be scrapped. Pashinyan gave a press conference on May 7, during which he refused to yield to the protesters' demands.
