Russian President Vladimir Putin invited his Mongolian counterpart Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan during bilateral talks in Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday.

"This will be the first event of this level after the expansion of this organisation. I hope that you will participate in the BRICS Outreach - BRICS Plus format. We are looking forward to seeing you in Russia," Putin added.

Khurelsukh replied that he accepted the invitation.

The Russian leader also said that the countries were on a 'growth trajectory in trade turnover' and also highlighted the effective co-operation in politics and education.

As is tradition, the talks were held in a yurt built inside the State Palace.

Putin arrived in Ulaanbaatar on Monday at the invitation of the Mongolian president, to take part in events marking the 85th anniversary of the joint forces' victory over Japanese militarists on the Khalkhin Gol River.

The Russian leader is also scheduled to engage in discussions with Chairman of the Great State Khural Dashzegve Amarbayasgalan and Prime Minister Prime Minister Luvsannamsrajn Oyun-Erdene.

Mongolia is a member of the International Criminal Court, which has a warrant out for Putin's arrest, related to alleged 'war crimes' related to deportation of children during the Ukraine conflict.

Ahead of the visit the ICC said that all members had an 'obligation' to detain those sought by it, while the EU and Ukraine also called for the country to make an arrest.

However, there is no legal enforcement procedure. The Kremlin has said it does not recognise the warrant, while on Monday Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov told reporters "we don't have a problem on the agenda - with Mongolia specifically". Mongolia has not commented.
