07:00Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commented on Kuala Lumpur's bid for BRICS membership at the Eastern Economic Forum plenary session in Vladivostok, noting that the country "aims to diversify our economic diplomacy efforts and enhance collaboration".
"The Global South network of BRICS would give us an opportunity to (for) leverage, to ensure that there is a fair trade practices, that the financial, international financial infrastructure is not monopolised by one country or one region. And then essentially, it will be beneficial not only to Malaysia, but I think to the Global South and naturally to the whole world," Ibrahim emphasised.
The PM also noted that Malaysia was "building a greater collaboration with China, which has become a stronger bond together. And China remains one of our major and key partners".
"Russia has been traditionally a good country that we work well [with] diplomatically. But as I said to President Putin last night, there are vast opportunities. Russia has seen its resilience, its capacity to expand in all sectors. Now being in BRICS would allow us to benefit and share," he continued.
Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng, for his part, claimed that China and Russia share a common goal of promoting 'co-operation, mutual trust and win-win for all'.
"Under the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Putin, China-Russia relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic co-operation in the new era are developing steadily," the politician added.
The IX Eastern Economic Forum is scheduled for September 3-6 in Vladivostok. Delegations from 62 countries, including China, India and African nations, are taking part in the events. The forum is aimed at creating and strengthening ties between Russian and foreign investment communities.
