For his part, Putin noted that this year would mark the 30th anniversary of the Treaty on Principles of Friendly Relations between Russia and Vietnam.
"We have been maintaining regular and meaningful political contacts throughout this time. This includes dialogue between parliaments, ministries, departments, parties, regions and civil organisations," he added.
Putin arrived in Hanoi for a two-day visit on Wednesday at the invitation of Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the country’s Communist Party.
The agenda for the state visit also includes meetings with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chair Tran Thanh Man.
The last time the Russian leader travelled to the republic was in 2017, when he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in Da Nang.
Earlier, Putin visited Pyongyang and held talks with DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) leader Kim Jong-un.
