Russian President Vladimir Putin said that all participants of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) were committed to the formation of a 'fair multipolar world order', while addressing a meeting of the organisation's Heads of State Council in Astana on Thursday.

"Co-ordinated SCO countries' approaches to key aspects of the global and regional agenda are reflected in the Astana Declaration, which was submitted for approval at the summit. It also underlines the commitment of all SCO participants to the formation of a fair multipolar world order based on the central role of the United Nations, international law and the aspirations of sovereign states for a mutually beneficial partnership," Putin said.

The leader also praised the 'close economic ties' between the member states of the organisation and recalled a Russian proposal to create the SCO’s 'own payment and settlement mechanism'.

"Close economic ties bring obvious dividends to all participants. The facts speak for themselves: for example, the average GDP growth of our member countries last year was more than five percent, industrial production 4.5 percent, while the inflation rate was only 2.4 percent. At the same time, Russia's trade turnover with the SCO countries increased by a quarter. In this context, I would like to note that our countries are increasingly using national currencies for mutual payments. For example, in the first four months of this year their share in Russia's trade transactions with members of the organisation already exceeded 92 percent. I would like to remind you of Russia's proposal to create its own payment and settlement mechanism within the SCO," he claimed.

Earlier at the summit, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that Belarus had now become a 'fully-fledged' member at this year's meeting.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is scheduled for July 3-4.

Leaders are expected to discuss the results of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024 and address co-operation in the political, security, economic and humanitarian spheres.

After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency for 2024-2025 will pass to China.

The SCO now comprises 10 member states, 14 dialogue partners and two observer countries.
