Vladimir Putin and Chinese Vice President Han Zheng found themselves temporarily 'lost in translation' thanks to a tech issue with their earpieces - before the Russian president decided they should do things 'the old-fashioned way' with human translators - during their talks in Vladivostok on Wednesday.

"OK, sit here, please," he asked an interpreter. "Here we go. Let's do this the old-fashioned way. Sit down, sit down. Let's do it this way, it's more reliable."

Footage also shows the two laughing together about the setback, and shaking hands. As the meeting continued, the Russian leader noted that he was looking forward to Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the BRICS summit in Kazan.

"Thanks to joint efforts, relations between China and Russia have reached an unprecedented high level. We attach great importance to inter-regional co-operation. I hope that during today's meeting and tomorrow's joint work at the Eastern Economic Forum, we will be able to seek and find new areas of our co-operation," the head of state added.

In turn, the Chinese vice-president thanked Putin for the meeting and conveyed President Xi's good wishes.

"We are facing various challenges and risks, but under the leadership of our leaders, co-operation between our two countries is developing steadily in all fields, especially in the trade and economic fields, to which the presidents have paid great attention," he said.

The Chinese vice-president added that the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries had already exceeded 200 billion dollars this year.

Putin arrived in Vladivostok to take part in the IX Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), which is held from September 3-6. Delegations from 62 countries, including China, India and African nations, are taking part in the events. The forum aims to create and strengthen ties between the Russian and foreign investment communities.

The Russian president is also scheduled to hold talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Serbian Deputy Speaker Aleksandar Vulin on the sidelines of the EEF, and take part in the plenary session.
