Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Western actions 'increasingly deviate' from the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, while speaking at an extended session with foreign ministers from the Global South and East on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.

"The imperative of fortifying the international legal framework and collective principles in global decision-making takes centre stage. Only then can these decisions carry the necessary effectiveness and legitimacy. This principle is enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Regrettably, decisions made by the collective West, particularly in the realms of economy, finance, and trade, increasingly deviate from the fundamental principles of the UN Charter," he said

Lavrov also noted 'a profound transformation' in international relations, signifying the creation of a 'more equitable poly-centric' world order.

"There is a growing trend towards amplifying the influence of the global majority of states beyond the traditional Western collective, particularly in regions such as Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean," he claimed.

The BRICS Ministerial Council meeting is scheduled to run from June 10-11. According to the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the partners are meeting to discuss the potential for collaboration on political, security, economic and humanitarian matters.

Foreign ministers from countries of the SCO, ASEAN, the Indian Ocean Rim Association For Regional Co-Operation, the African Union, the League of Arab States and other organisations will also take part in an extended session on the sidelines of the event.

Russia has been chairman of the BRICS grouping since January 1, 2024, when five countries became full members of the bloc, namely Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia.
