Description

Egyptian House of Representatives Speaker Hanafy El Gebaly said that the BRICS organisation should 'pump new blood' into the system of international co-operation, while addressing the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum’s plenary session in St Petersburg on Thursday.

"In this context, all eyes and hopes are set on the BRICS to pump new blood into the veins of the global system. To face the challenges of the current era and push the frameworks and the mechanisms of international co-operation to broader horizons," he said.

In turn, Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin noted that the growth in the number of the organisation’s permanent members confirmed the demand for a 'multipolar and equitable' world order.

"Over the years, the association has become one of the largest economic centres that expresses the interests of world society. Our countries now account for more than a third of the world's land area and 45 percent of its population," Volodin continued.

Zhao Leji, chair of Chinese Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said that it was 'very important' to strengthen ties between parliaments 'in the interests of the Global South'.

"In addition, we need to constantly expand the BRICS+ format; now BRICS covers half of the world's population, more than a quarter of the world's GDP, and we need to further strengthen and utilise the advantages that this scale of BRICS provides us," he continued.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stressed that his country was striving for 'de-dollarisation' within BRICS and using 'national currencies' in mutual payments.

"We are now experiencing tremendous pressure from the West on our economy," he added.

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum takes place in St Petersburg from July 11-12, with delegations from 17 countries participating. According to organisers, parliamentarians are discussing ways to improve the efficiency of international relations, counter any fragmentation of multilateral trade, address the consequences of global crises, and enhance co-operation in humanitarian and cultural spheres.
