Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla said BRICS promotes 'balance' in international relations, during a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday.

"Thank you for Russia's warm hospitality in Nizhny Novgorod during the highly successful BRICS Ministerial Meeting. It was an unforgettable opportunity for me to highlight Cuba's strong commitment to this group," Parilla said.

"[BRICS] plays a crucial role in maintaining balance in the international arena and establishing a new multipolar international order based on sovereign equality and democracy. Additionally, it provided a platform to express Cuba's keen interest in joining BRICS," the diplomat continued.

In response, Lavrov expressed appreciation for the Cuban delegation's participation in the BRICS Council of Foreign Ministers meeting.

"We greatly value the benefits derived from such events involving the majority of countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia," the foreign minister said.

The BRICS Ministerial Council meeting took place from 10 to 11 June in Nizhny Novgorod, where the participants discussed prospects for multifaceted cooperation in politics and security, economy and finance, and humanitarian ties, as per the Russian Foreign Ministry's press service.

Russia has been chairman of the BRICS grouping since January 1, 2024, when five countries joined the bloc as full members, namely Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia.
