The United Arab Emirates is ready to help stabilise the situation in Ukraine, President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said at a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 26th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday.
"Regarding Ukraine - thank you for your words, and if you think that the Emirates can play any more role in the development of the situation there, in stabilising the situation, in humanitarian issues - we are ready to assist in every way possible," noted Al Nahyan.
The politician also stressed the importance of the forum, and added that cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries would play a major role in the development of bilateral relations.
In turn, Putin thanked his colleague for efforts to resolve humanitarian issues in the Ukrainian conflict, and said that relations between Russia and the Emirates were developing 'very successfully'.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
