Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that 'underdeveloped' BRICS was ahead of the G7 'by all indicators', comparing the groups’ GDPs at a session of the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Saturday.

"[BRICS] is over 30 per cent of the Earth's landmass, 45 per cent of the world's population, that's three and a half billion people, 33 per cent of the world's GDP," Zakharova said, adding: "As of today, it is three per cent more than the GDP of the G7."

"This is an incredible indicator, because 10 years ago we were told that we were underdeveloped, and today the underdeveloped are ahead of the dominant country by all indicators," she continued.

Zakharova also said the world had to 'pay tribute to the millions of people' from Africa who 'served this Western domination for hundreds of years'.

"It should not be hashtags or campaigns like Black Lives Matter (BLM), which only serve to reaffirm Western hegemonism. It should be a real reassessment, a real contribution, not an unsystematic work. It should be understanding, incorporating this example into educational processes around the world, and finally repaying the debt to the African continent," she added.

SPIEF 2024, taking place from June 5-8, includes participants from over 136 countries. Since its inception in 1997, the forum has served as a platform for international dialogue on economic matters, with the patronage and participation of the Russian Federation's president since 2005.
