Description

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peaskov stated that 'those responsible for these mass explosions' of pagers in Lebanon 'must be found', during a press briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

"This situation must first be handled properly before any judgements are made. We believe that, certainly, an absolutely comprehensive investigation of this incident must be held, the causes of and circumstances of what happened must be determined, and, without a doubt, those responsible for these mass explosions of communication devices must be found," Peskov said.

He added that the incident could 'potentially trigger the situation to get out of control' and 'inevitably lead to an escalation of tension' in the region that 'is already in an explosive state'.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least 12 people had been killed and around 2,800 injured following mass pager explosions across Lebanon earlier on Tuesday.

The Hezbollah group called it a 'criminal aggression' by Israel, confirming that the devices belonged to "employees of various Hezbollah units and institutions", and said that it would get 'retribution'. Israel has not commented on the blasts at time of publication.

Egypt, Russia, Iraq, Jordan, Iran and Yemen all condemned the attack. The US State Department said it was not involved and had no advance knowledge of the explosions.

Cross-border clashes are ongoing between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, as well as other Lebanese and Palestinian factions, and have intensified since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
