Russia was 'bravely' resisting sanctions imposed on it by the West, President of the Republic of Congo Sassou Nguesso claimed at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday.

"This visit here takes place amid a difficult international situation. At a time when your country, your people, are behaving bravely and resisting the sanctions illegally imposed on your country following the conflicts between your country and Ukraine and perhaps others. That is why we would like to congratulate you and the Russian people on their courage and strength," Sassou Nguesso said.

The Congolese President added that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between the two countries.

"Russia and the Republic of Congo have been maintaining relations of sincere friendship and solidarity for 60 years," Congo’s leader continued. "Your country didn't establish relations with just the Republic of Congo, but with the entire African continent. It was here that the nations of Africa found the strength and determination to resist colonisation and fight for their freedom. The peoples of Africa are grateful."

Putin, for his part, highlighted that the two leaders had developed 'warm and friendly relations' at both intergovernmental and personal levels.

"You have made a significant personal contribution to the development of Russian-Congolese relations, attended two Russia-Africa summits and are doing a great deal to further develop our interaction in nearly all spheres. I am referring to the political sphere, and our trade and economic ties have recently been growing visibly," the Russian president said.

At the end of the talks, Putin awarded the Congolese president the Order of Honour for his contribution to the development and strengthening of relations between Moscow and Brazzaville.

Sassou Nguesso arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for a state visit at the invitation of Putin. On the eve of the talks, the Congolese leader laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden.

Sassou Nguesso last met Putin in July 2023 on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg.
