Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow will respond in case Washington and Berlin 'deploy American long-range precision missile systems on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany'. This was said during a speech at a parade in honour of the Navy Day in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

"If the United States of America implement such plans, we will consider ourselves free from the unilateral moratorium on the deployment of medium- and shorter-range strike capabilities, including the enhancement of the capabilities of the littoral forces of our Navy," Putin said.

The Russian leader noted that the deployment of missile systems entered the 'final stages' and Moscow will 'take mirror measures to deploy them, taking into account the actions of the United States and its satellites in Europe and other regions of the world'.

On 10 July, the White House press office announced that the US and Germany had reached a joint decision to deploy SM-6, Tomahawk missiles and long-range hypersonic weapons currently in development in Europe.

The United States will commence the episodic deployment of its long-range weapons to Germany in 2026 as part of the planning process for their eventual permanent deployment.

Furthermore, the office stated that this decision would demonstrate the United States' commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and its contribution to 'European integrated deterrence'.

The Day of the Russian Navy was established on 31 May 2006 by a decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of July.
