Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that 34 countries had expressed their desire to join BRICS in 'one form or another', speaking at a meeting with the organisation’s high representatives in charge of security issues in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
"We could not ignore the growing interest in BRICS on the part of many countries. As of today, more than three dozen countries, 34 countries to be exact, have already expressed their desire to join the activities of our association in one form or another," Putin stated.
He also said that Russia’s BRICS presidency plan 'has been fulfilled by more than 70 percent'.
"Russia’s presidency has initiated new areas of co-operation, including meetings of transport ministers, heads of geological agencies, and the BRICS forum on nuclear medicine. In the cultural and humanitarian area, the BRICS civil and academic forums, the World Friendship Games, as well as thematic festivals and exhibitions in various Russian cities, attracted a great attention," the Russian leader added.
The meeting of high-ranking security officials of BRICS and BRICS+ countries takes place in St. Petersburg on September 10-12.
Russia has held the BRICS presidency since January 1, 2024, when five more countries - Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia - were invited to join.
