Description

More than two thousand people flew kites of various shapes and sizes at Fortolet, the Fort Constantine International Kite Festival in St. Petersburg on Saturday.

Footage shows visitors with children sending kites in the form of giant dragons, colourful octopuses, fish, frogs and cartoon characters soaring into the sky, while other event-goers enjoy the spectacle.

"It’s a family event. Our club flies kites and makes it look beautiful, entertaining, and joyful. <...> Perfect weather, wonderful atmosphere. And around 1,500-2000 people have attended the festival," Elena Shteleva, a member of St Petersburg’s Kite Flyers Club, said.

She added that the size of the kites ranges from 5 to 20 metres, and that some are made by the club members themselves.

Visitor Vladislav came to the event because his daughter was interested, but soon found himself hooked on kiting himself.

"It’s an unusual event. We are here for the first time. My daughter wanted to go, and look, I’m flying a kite myself. It’s an event the whole family can enjoy," he added.

St Petersburg’s Kite Flyers Club has been organising kite flying events and kite making workshops since 2012.
