The BRICS 2024 Games celebrated the Tatar 'Sabantuy' folk festival at the Universiade Village in Kazan on Monday.

Footage shows athletes taking time out from their disciplines to enjoy sack races, fight 'duals' with large bags, and immerse themselves in other traditional events, as well as enjoy an evening disco.

Lebanese athlete Hyli Hamden said he hoped he would get to visit the country again.

"I really like the games. The emotions are unbelievable. Like we came all over the world to these games and we are getting to know each other. We are getting to know like another countries, another traditions, another country. Like it's really unbelievable. It's really amazing," he added.

Indian national team member Tiran Duin said that after the competition, he planned to take a closer look at the sights of Kazan as Russia had become his 'favourite country'.

"Really nice people and I can meet like so many different people with the different sports… I'm loving it," he said.

James Siligar, a participant from South Africa, also said his perception of Russia had changed thanks to the hospitality shown to them.

The traditional Tatar and Bashkir holiday 'Sabantuy' is timed to coincide with the end of spring field work and is held in the first summer month. Kazan will officially celebrates 'Sabantuy' on June 23, the same day as the closing ceremony of the BRICS Games.

The BRICS Games is an annual multi-sport competition between the BRICS organisation member states and invited guests, across a range of disciplines includes athletics, gymnastics, wrestling and many others. This year's takes place in Kazan and Moscow from June 12-23, with around 5,000 athletes from 97 countries participating.
