Russian President Vladimir Putin described Egypt's El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant as a 'real flagship project' as he and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi attended the ceremony for the start of construction on Unit Four, via videoconference on Tuesday.

"Let us provide for the creation of modern production facilities, qualified jobs, and resolution of social issues. We are going to do this together, as the new energy system allows us to do so. This is a real flagship project in the best traditions of our bilateral co-operation," said Putin.

Meanwhile, el-Sisi noted that the construction of the next nuclear power plant unit was a testament to the strengthening of bilateral ties.

"Today, we are witnessing this great event, which represents a new shining chapter in the path of close co-operation between Egypt and the Russian Federation as well as a new achievement in the history of Egyptian-Russian mutual partnership throughout history," he added.

The El-Dabaa NPP site is located in Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, around 350 kilometres from Cairo. Construction work at the plant began on July 20, 2022.

The nuclear power plant will include four power units with Russian VVER-1200 reactors, making Egypt the first country in the region to have Generation 3+ technology.
