President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso was awarded an honorary doctorate degree at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) National Research University in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

Footage shows the Congolese leader arriving on the campus of the educational institution, and director Anna Tyshetskaya awarding the honorary degree to President Sassou Nguesso in a formal ceremony.

"We are very pleased that the Higher School of Economics has students from the Republic of the Congo. Your Excellency, Mr President, here in Russia, we have great respect for you. Your name for us in Russia is inextricably linked to significant global humanitarian initiatives. <...> As a token of our friendship and respect for your contribution to the development of humanitarian initiatives, the Academic Council of the University presents you with a diploma of Honorary Doctor of the Higher School of Economics," Tyshetskaya said.

The president thanked the head of the Higher School of Economics for presenting the award.

"By giving me this diploma, you are honouring my country and Africa. <...> By doing so, you honour the Republic of the Congo and uphold our and my fellow citizens' justified pride," Sassou Nguesso added.

The head of state added that his visit marks the '60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations' between Russia and Congo.

Sassou Nguesso arrived in Moscow on Tuesday at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. As part of his visit, the head of the central African nation laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Gardens.

On Friday, Sassou Nguesso held talks with Putin, during which the Russian leader awarded his Congolese counterpart with the Order of Honour for his \contribution to the development and strengthening of relations between the two countries.
