Description

Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore awarded Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with the Order of the Stallion, the highest state honour, in Ouagadougou on Wednesday.

Footage shows a member of the presidential staff placing the order around Lavrov's neck, before the diplomat thanked the head of state for the honour, and they were photographed together. The video also shows the Lavrov speaking at a press conference following talks with Traore.

"We very much appreciate the objective and fair position of the president of Burkina Faso regarding the events in Ukraine caused by the hybrid war unleashed by the West against the Russian Federation And Burkina Faso is among a large group of countries that refuse to support the anti-Russian initiatives promoted by the West and the Kiev regime," the politician said.

Lavrov added that Russia supported African countries that wished to dispense with the 'West's neo-colonial practices.

"President Traore gave a detailed description of the steps taken by Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali to establish and develop an Alliance of Sahel States (AES)," he said. "The concept of AES manifests the overriding principle of 'African solutions to African problems'. Africans do not want to hear any more advice from the former colonisers."

Lavrov arrived in Ouagadougou on Tuesday on an official visit as part of his latest African tour. The day before, he visited Conakry to meet Guinean Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyate, and held talks with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso and Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakosso in Oyo.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
