Description

Azerbaijani National Assembly Speaker Sahiba Gafarova said that the country had expressed its 'desire to join the BRICS' organisation, while speaking at the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum plenary session in St Petersburg on Thursday.

"Dear colleagues, ensuring the efficiency of the international system demands also establishing equitable relationships based on mutual benefits, respecting each other and strengthening genuine multilateralism. Azerbaijan has put them at the centre of its foreign policy, also promoting dialogue, co-operation and solidarity both in its bilateral relations and activities in multilateral formats. These are the principles that also move forward the BRICS. Azerbaijan has already expressed its desire to join the BRICS," she said.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian House of Federation Speaker Agegnehu Teshager stressed that the existing global economic and political system should be 'more inclusive and democratic', emphasising that his country remained determined to a 'stronger and reformed multilateral system [and] meaningful South-South co-operation'.

"In this regard, our public diplomacy should further reflect the priorities of BRICS and aspirations of Global South," he continued.

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum takes place in St Petersburg from July 11-12, with delegations from 17 countries participating. According to organisers, parliamentarians are discussing ways to improve the efficiency of international relations, counter any fragmentation of multilateral trade, address the consequences of global crises, and enhance co-operation in humanitarian and cultural spheres.
