Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that co-operation between Moscow and Pyongyan was based on 'the principles of equality and mutual respect', during talks with DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) leader Kim Jong-un on Wednesday.

"Russia and the DPRK have been linked for many decades by strong friendship and close good-neighbourliness," Putin said.

"Co-operation between our countries is based on the principles of equality and mutual respect for each other's interests," he continued.

The Russian president added that Moscow appreciated Pyongyang’s support in the country’s 'fight against the hegemonic and imperialist policy' of Washington and its allies.

"We deeply appreciate your consistent and unwavering support for Russia’s policy, including on the Ukrainian issue, our fight against the hegemonic and imperialist policy of the United States and its satellites imposed against the Russian Federation," Putin said.

Putin arrived in Pyongyang for a two-day official visit on Tuesday at the invitation of DPRK’s leader Kim Jong-un. The parties are expected to discuss various topics such as the economy, energy, agriculture, trade, international relations and security.

This visit marks the Russian president's second trip to the DPRK. In 2000 he met with the incumbent leader's father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il.

Following his visit, Putin is set to travel to Hanoi at the invitation of Nguyen Phu Trong, Secretary General of the Vietnamese Communist Party's Central Committee.
