Russian President Vladimir Putin was seen taking a look around the cockpit of a nuclear-capable Tu-160M supersonic bomber during a visit to the Sergei Gorbunov Aviation Plant in Kazan on Wednesday.

Footage shows Putin, along with other officials, inspecting the missile carrier, with the head of state spending around 10 minutes in the cockpit.

The Russian president also took time to honour the first president of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shamiev, by naming the aircraft after him, stating that he 'has not only done a lot for Tatarstan, but also for the country itself'.

"We're in Tatarstan. Let's call it Mintimer Shaimiev. This is the new missile carrier. And this is a man who has done a lot," Putin suggested.

Rustam Minnikhanov, the current leader of the Republic of Tatarstan, commended the president for the suggestion and said his predecessor was 'deserving of the honour'.

Mintimer Sharipovich Shaimiev served as the first president of Tatarstan, a republic within the Russian Federation, from 1991 to 2010. He is known for his efforts in promoting the Tatar language and culture, as well as for his role in advocating for the rights and autonomy of Tatarstan within the framework of the Russian Federation.

Putin arrived in Kazan on Wednesday, where he is expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings.

The head of state, accompanied by the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Republika Srpska, will also tour the sports stadiums hosting the Games of the Future.

The Games of the Future is an international multi-sport tournament held in Kazan from February 21 to March 3, with around 2,000 people expected to take part.

Organised by the Russian Ministry of Sport, the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan's municipal administration and the Directorate of Sports and Social Projects, it marks the first ever phygital sporting competition, with competitors battling it out in real-life sporting disciplines and via e-sports.
