Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov claimed on Monday that Moscow 'understand[s] perfectly who is behind' the attack on the beach in Sevastopol, Crimea the previous day, and suggested there would be a response.

"We see an absolutely barbaric missile attack in Crimea. We understand perfectly who is behind it. Just last week, the president repeatedly spoke about who was pointing these completely technologically sophisticated missiles at targets."

"He said that it was not the Ukrainians who ensured these launches and so on," Peskov added. "This is all perfectly understandable. By the way, you can probably ask my colleagues in Europe, first of all in Washington, as representatives of the media, why do their governments kill Russian children? Just ask them such a simple question."

Moscow claimed that US-supplied ATACMS missiles had killed at least four and injured over 150 in the strike on Sunday.

"This is all perfectly understandable. <...> Of course, the US involvement in military actions is direct. They are involved in fighting resulting in the deaths of Russian civilians. Time will tell what kind of consequences it will have," Peskov added.

Washington and Kiev have not commented.

Meanwhile, Peskov added that Russian President Vladimir Putin was receiving updates on the situation in Crimea - and the attacks in Dagestan too.

"The president expresses his deepest condolences to all those who lost their relatives in Crimea as a result of the missile attack and to the relatives and friends of those killed in Dagestan. Appropriate assistance will be provided to all of them," the spokesperson said.

Sunday also saw a series of deadly attacks on churches, synagogues and police posts in Russia's predominantly Muslim Dagestan, in both Makhachkala and Derbent. At time of publication, around 20 people were confirmed dead, many of them police officers, and dozens taken to hospital.

The Russian Investigative Committee for the Republic of Dagestan opened criminal cases into the attacks as possible 'terrorist acts'.

Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov described the incident in his Telegram channel as 'a despicable provocation and an attempt to bring discord between religions'.
