Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Azerbaijan’s capital, saying that the city became 'an oasis' in the South Caucasus, during a meeting with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev on Monday.

"I am very glad to be in Baku, to admire this city once again, the development of which you - I know it firsthand - and your wife pay great attention to. It is obvious. The city is developing successfully, turning into such an oasis in the region, I would say," Putin stated.

"We love Baku, Baku is a beautiful city. And, most importantly, it is developing in a way that many other large cities would envy," he continued.

For his part, Aliyev emphasised that he was pleased with the level of bilateral co-operation between the two countries.

"The Declaration on Allied Interaction that we signed in February 2022 is being successfully implemented. We see very positive dynamics and good figures in both the political and economic spheres. And, of course, we co-operate in energy and transport. We pay special attention to humanitarian co-operation," he added.

Putin arrived in Baku on Sunday for a two-day state visit. The Kremlin reported that the two plan to discuss further development of bilateral relations and their strategic partnership, as well as current international and regional issues.
