'External forces' are exploiting the Israel-Hamas conflict to incite war in the Middle East, claimed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the meeting of the Russian-Arab Co-operation Forum in Marrakech on Wednesday.

"It has become obvious that some external forces are not averse to using the next aggravation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in their own interests - to ignite the fire of regional enmity to build on the numerous past ventures of the US and its allies, which have been unleashed in the Middle East over the past 20 years and which have resulted in undermined statehood, hundreds of thousands of victims, huge flows of refugees," said the foreign minister.

In addition, Lavrov noted that new centres of power were playing an increasing role in world politics.

"We are convinced that it is impossible to turn back the course of history. New centres for making globally significant decisions have emerged on the world stage. Among them, the Arab countries are playing an increasingly important role. The sooner all our Western 'colleagues' realise this truth, the better for them," he emphasised.

Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials have reported that at least 20,000 people have been killed and more than 52,000 injured at the time of publication.

However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
