Description

Head of Roscosmos Yuri Borisov claimed that the BRICS countries 'strongly oppose' the deployment of weapons in outer space following the organisation's plenary meetings in Moscow on Friday.

"We discussed a joint statement that most likely would be announced in September during the summit of the BRICS heads. Its essence is that all space activities of our space agencies are primarily related to peaceful [use of] space. And we strongly oppose the militarisation of space, so that it remains a platform for civilian purposes only," Borisov said.

He also noted that the UN Security Council had rejected Russia's resolution to prevent an arms race in space.

"You know the results of the debate on that resolution. So that's the answer to that. And we just want to demonstrate once again to the entire civilised community and to all the leading powers that are not members of BRICS that our intentions are not empty words. We will consistently move in this direction," Borisov said.

The head of the state-owned corporation added the creation of a global system for monitoring outer space and the establishment of a new body - the BRICS Space Council, as well as the involvement of new members of the organization in the work on pilot space projects had been discussed at the plenary sessions.

On April 24, following a vote at a UN Security Council meeting, 13 of the 15 member states supported the resolution on the non-deployment of nuclear weapons in space, China abstained, and Russia vetoed it.

On the same day, the UN Security Council rejected a Russian-Chinese amendment to the resolution on the complete prevention of the placement of weapons and the threat of use of force in outer space. According to a statement published on the UN website, the draft failed to garner the necessary nine votes for its adoption.

The vote came amid US claims that Russia was developing an anti-satellite nuclear weapon. Russia denied the allegation with Russian President Vladimir Putin stating that Moscow is against putting nuclear arms in space.
