Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that the latest US accusations of Russian media 'interfering' in the American elections were 'sheer madness' and 'tragicomic', speaking on the sidelines of the IX Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday.
"The persecution of the Russian media by the West, and primarily by the United States has been carried out on a systematic basis. It fits into the general Russophobic course <...> It fits into the current electoral cycle, which has now hit the finish line," she said.
Zakharova suggested that the purpose was to make the issue "a tool in the current political battles that are unfolding in the United States of America".
"In this case we are talking about such an elaborate information campaign, to which the American special services had a thorough hand, of course. And that's why this whole manipulative situation, it really, in my opinion, already stands out even from the general number of absurdist steps by its sheer madness. And, on the other hand, by its tragicomic nature", Zakharova added.
On Thursday, the US accused the Russian media of 'election interference', charging two RT workers with FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) violations. In response to what RT said was a CNN request about an article about election interference, the organisation commented: 'Hahahaha!'
"2016 called and it wants its clichés back," it continued. "Three things are certain in life: death, taxes and RT's interference in the US elections… Somewhere Secretary Clinton is sad that it's not because of her."
Moscow has repeatedly denied interfering in successive US presidential elections. An investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election - which saw Donald Trump take on Hilary Clinton - found no evidence of conspiracy or co-ordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
