Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia-Iran trade 'grew by almost 10 percent' over the first six months of the year, during a meeting with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian on the sidelines of the BRICS events in St Petersburg on Thursday.

"It is also important to note that after last year's decline in two-way trade, the first half of this year has seen a positive turnaround. Trade between Russia and Iran grew by almost 10 percent," Putin stated.

The Russian leader also said that the International North-South Transport Corridor was 'one of the priority projects'.

"I reiterate my interest in the implementation of this major project. We have many other topics which are certainly interesting and important for both Iran and Russia. I would like to reiterate that we are determined to move forward in all these directions," he continued.

For his part, Ahmadian stressed that the Russian-Iranian relationship would be 'no different from its past' after the election of Masoud Pezeshkian as the new president of his country.

"I have spoken to him many times and repeatedly. He is in favour of maintaining and developing relations," he added.

The meeting of high-ranking security officials of BRICS and BRICS+ countries takes place in St. Petersburg on September 10-12.

Russia has held the BRICS presidency since January 1, 2024, when five more countries - Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia - were invited to join.
