Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan described the latest escalation at the border with Azerbaijan as 'another demonstration' of Baku’s 'destructive policy' during a government meeting on Thursday.

"As a result of Azerbaijan's aggressive actions on Armenia’s state border, four servicemen were killed while on combat duty in the area of Nerkin Hand village in the Kapan Municipality of the Syunik Province. I offer my condolences to the families and friends of the victims. I think it is necessary to stress that what happened is yet another demonstration of Azerbaijan's destructive policy," Pashinyan said.

The Armenian PM also stressed that Yerevan had a constructive attitude and was ready to establish a clear border with Azerbaijan.

"We say that in order to withdraw the troops from their current positions, it is necessary to mark the Armenia-Azerbaijan border on the map and on the ground, and withdraw the troops of the two countries from this border line," he explained.

On 12 February, Azerbaijan's State Border Guard Service claimed that 'Armenian armed forces opened fire' on its positions in the village of Kollugyshlag in the Zangilan district.

"Following the provocation, a serviceman of the State Border Service Khalilzadeh Parviz Agakishi was wounded. The serviceman was evacuated by helicopter to a specialised medical facility," the press service added.

The Armenian Defence Ministry said that claims regarding the shelling of Azerbaijani positions 'does not correspond to reality'.

The next day, the press office of Azerbaijan's State Border Service announced that it was conducting a 'retaliatory operation' in response to Yerevan's 'provocation'.

On the same day, the Armenian Defence Ministry accused Baku of opening fire on border guard positions near the village of Nerkin Hand. The ministry later claimed that four guards on duty were killed and one wounded following the shelling.

Following the long-running conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan retook control of the breakaway territory, a separatist area governed by ethnic Armenians, in September.

It followed what Baku called a 'counter-terrorist operation' in the region, which Yerevan described as a 'large-scale aggression'.

Baku claims sovereignty over the territory, while earlier this year, the Yerevan government recognised Azerbaijan’s claim - but also called for protection for the region's ethnic Armenians.

On 1 January 2024, the unrecognised Nagorno-Karabakh Republic officially ceased to exist in accordance with the Decree of Self-Dissolution signed by NKR President Samvel Shahramanyan on September 28, 2023.
