Kim Jong-un, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said that DPRK-Russia relations had taken to a new level, during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang on Wednesday.

"The relations between our two countries are now entering a new period of prosperity, which cannot be compared even with the Korean-Soviet relations in the last century. I am confident that during this visit, the ardent friendship as well as the spirits of our peoples will be strengthened," Kim Jong-un said.

The DPRK leader also spoke of the significant role he believed Russia played in maintaining the strategic world stability.

"The government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea appreciates the important mission and role of the strong Russian Federation in maintaining the strategic balance and stability in the world and expresses its full support as well as solidarity to the Russian government, army and people in its special military operation in Ukraine to protect its sovereignty, security interests as well as territorial integrity," he continued.

Putin arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday for a two-day official visit. The heads of state are scheduled to hold discussions on various topics such as the economy, energy, agriculture, trade, international relations, and security.

This visit marks the Russian president's second trip to the DPRK. In 2000 he met with the current leader's father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il.

Following his official visit to Pyongyang, Putin will leave for Hanoi at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong.
