Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged to increase trade turnover with Russia to $100 billion, speaking at a bilateral meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Astana on Wednesday.

"We now have a trade turnover of $55 billion, which is very small," Erdogan stated. "We have set ourselves the goal of reaching $100 billion. I believe we will reach that mark. We have such potential in this area."

Erdogan also stressed the importance of Russian tourists to the Turkish economy, noting that 'about 7 million tourists [from Russia] will visit our country. This is very important'.

"I would like to mention one more thing. I look forward to seeing you, Mr President, in my country as soon as possible," he added.

In response, Putin thanked him for the invitation and agreed to visit. He also praised Turkish hospitality for Russian holidaymakers.

"I would like to say that last year we probably saw a record number of our tourists in Turkey: 6.3 million tourists from Russia visited Turkey. I would like to thank you for the conditions created in Turkey for the citizens of the Russian Federation," he said.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will be held in Astana on July 3-4.

Leaders will discuss the results of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024 and address co-operation in the political, security, economic and humanitarian spheres.

After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency for 2024-2025 will pass to China.

The SCO comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The organisation also includes 14 dialogue partners and three observer countries.
