Inmates at the IK-19 Surovikino penal colony in the Volgograd region took prison guards hostage on Friday, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) reported.

Footage released from the penitentiary shows armed inmates and an injured staff member.

The Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under part four of article 206 (hostage-taking) and part three of article 321 (disorganisation of the colony's work) of the Russian Criminal Code.

Anatoly Sebelev, chairman of the Volgograd regional health committee, said at least four people were injured in the incident and were being treated.

According to the FSIN, the incident took place during a meeting of the disciplinary commission, with action currently underway to free the hostages.

Earlier, videos of the hostage-takers displaying the symbols of ISIS appeared online. ISIS is considered a terrorist organisation by many nations and blocs across the world, including the EU, Russia, USA, UAE and more.

UPDATE: Later on Friday, Russia's National Guard reported that four inmates had been 'neutralised' and guards freed.
