Description

The Russian Defence Ministry published drone footage purportedly showing the destruction of a Ukrainian Mi-24 attack helicopter and other aviation engineering service vehicles, following a strike by its Iskander missile defence system in Ukraine’s Poltava region on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian side has not commented on the strike at the time of publication. An AFU report on Wednesday only stated that the Russian Armed Forces 'maintain [a] military presence' at the border of the nearby Chernihiv and Sumy regions.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.

The date of the footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defence cannot be independently verified.
