Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his gratitude for Burkina Faso's assistance in reopening the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou, during a meeting with the country's Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traore on Tuesday.

Footage shows Lavrov descending the aircraft ramp at the capital's airport and shaking hands with his counterpart. The video also shows the Russian and African delegations at the negotiating table.

"Thank you very much for your effective assistance in addressing the matters that allowed us to resume the work of our embassy in Ouagadougou. We are pursuing a programme to resume the work of Russian diplomatic missions in Africa. Burkina Faso was the first country where this happened quickly and efficiently," the diplomat said.

Lavrov added that there had been prompt and efficient resolution of issues that facilitated the resumption of embassy activities, and emphasised the country's pivotal role in the reactivation of Russian diplomatic missions in the region.

He also underscored that the discussions with Burkina Faso would invigorate friendly relations between the two nations.

In response, Traore thanked Lavrov for his visit, emphasising the dedication and commitment demonstrated by the Russian foreign minister.

"I am very touched that you agreed to hold this meeting, only leaving the plane after several hours of flying. You arrived, and we got to work immediately. This shows your dedication, your desire to continue the bonds we strengthened during the meeting in St Petersburg," the minister said.

The Russian Embassy's operations in Burkina Faso were suspended in 1992, and after a 31-year hiatus, the diplomatic mission resumed its activities on December 28 2023. The Burkina Faso military took control of the country in September 2022, removing the leadership which had taken power in a coup eight months earlier.

Lavrov's official visit to Ouagadougou was part of his broader African tour, which included meetings with other African leaders in Conakry and Oyo.
