Russian President Vladimir Putin said that BRICS parliamentary co-operation was of 'great interest' and enjoyed 'significant confidence' from the international community, while speaking with the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Speaker of the Tanzania’s National Assembly Tulia Ackson on the sidelines of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St Petersburg on Thursday.

"Both BRICS as a whole and the parliamentary dimension of BRICS cooperation are of great interest and enjoy significant confidence from the international community. This is understandable, as the principles guiding BRICS - true equality and the consideration of each member's interests - naturally attract international participants," Putin said.

In turn, Ackson stressed that different parts of Africa saw 'challenges' and claimed that IPU tried to 'create a platform' for parliamentarians to 'sit together and discuss' them.

"At the moment, there are conflicts all over the world, and including my own continent, Africa. As you might know, we have challenges in different parts of Africa. And as IPU, we are working harder to make sure we try to create a platform where, as parliamentarians, we can sit together and discuss how we can get to that," she said.

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum takes place in St Petersburg from July 11-12, with delegations from 17 countries participating. According to organisers, parliamentarians are discussing ways to improve the efficiency of international relations, counter any fragmentation of multilateral trade, address the consequences of global crises, and enhance co-operation in humanitarian and cultural spheres.
