UAE Supreme National Security Council Secretary General Ali Mohammed Al Shamsi urged the countries of the Global South to face the modern challenges together, speaking at a meeting of BRICS and BRICS+ high-ranking security officials in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

"Our meeting today, as representatives of the BRICS countries and the Global South, demonstrates our deep belief in the need for communication and co-operation to ensure international security. The challenges we face have no borders and require all countries to work together to overcome them," Al Shamsi stated.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the meeting was 'particularly important' in the face of new global changes.

"Today, the world is entering a new period of turbulent change, in which various security threats are intertwined and mutually reinforcing, and the international security deficit is widening," Wang Yi said.

"After 18 years of development, the BRICS countries are increasingly becoming a constructive force in maintaining world peace, promoting common development, improving global governance and democratising international relations," he continued.

South African Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni called on the meeting participants to "elevate the attention it pays to the climate change and food security matters because the world will remain generally insecure without food security of the people of the Global South."

The meeting of high-ranking security officials of BRICS and BRICS+ countries takes place in St. Petersburg on September 10-12.
