Description

Islam Israilov, a vascular surgeon at the Ependiyev Republican Clinical Hospital in Russia’s Grozny, travels to African countries to treat poor patients for free.

Footage taken in January and May features Israilov and his colleagues performing a surgery in Tanzania as well as inspecting a hospital in Yemen. Video filmed on Thursday shows the surgeon sitting at his desk in Grozny and showing photos of his patients.

"Once or twice a year we travel specifically to the places where we are needed. These are Yemen, Mauritania, Namibia, Iraq, Tanzania," Israilov said, adding: "In these countries I mentioned and in many other countries, if a person has no money, if he has no health insurance, even if he is at the hospital site and injured, let’s say he has a heart attack or anything else, he will die right on the spot in pain. No one will come to him, no one will help him. So, these moments motivated us to go there every now and then."

The surgeon added that his crew manages to treat only a small number of people during their trips, but what they do 'is real help for real people'.

According to Israilov, most of the time host countries provide them with accommodation and meals, however, the doctors have to bring their own meds, dressing supplies and tools as the public hospitals where they end up working usually have no basic amenities.

"When you see their life and you then remember that you have a stable job, you have a car, you have your own house, family, you know that you are better than any millionaire, you are self-sufficient here. Yes, you don’t have the best house, you don’t have the coolest car - these are just nuances. So, probably, there is a change in your perception of life: you are more grateful to God for what he has given you," he concluded.
