Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov offered condolences at the Iranian Embassy in Moscow on Wednesday over the death of the country’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The footage shows the foreign minister talking to the Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali and leaving an entry in the book of condolence.

'The minister offered condolences to the families of the victims, wished them fortitude, expressed confidence that the wise Iranian people will with honour withstand this test and continue the comprehensive development of their state,' the Russian Foreign Ministry's press service said.

The 63-year-old President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and their companions were killed when their helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province during heavy fog on Sunday.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber is serving as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has become acting foreign minister.

Messages of condolence arrived from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Ayatollah Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
