Several people, including a child, have been killed in an explosion at a petrol station in the village of Novy Khushet on the outskirts of Makhachkala, Dagestan's health ministry said on Friday.

"According to preliminary data, four people, including a child, died as a result of the explosion. Another four victims with shrapnel wounds and burns were treated by paramedics on the spot. They are now being transported to hospital, their condition is moderate," the ministry said.

Footage shows the area around the petrol station engulfed in smoke and residents gathering near burning cars. .

Russia's EMERCOM said the petrol station building was destroyed and the fire covered 1,500 square metres. 119 specialists, 27 units of equipment and four fire brigades are working at the scene.

The Head of the Republic, Sergei Melikov, confirmed that he had travelled to the scene.

He immediately ordered all relevant agencies to provide assistance. First and foremost, the medical response is of paramount importance.

"We will provide comprehensive support to all those affected by this tragedy," Melikov stated via his Telegram channel.

Media reports citing operational services indicate that there may still be victims under the rubble.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Dagestan has started a criminal case for providing services that fail to meet safety requirements for consumers, resulting in the death of two or more people by negligence.

The Prosecutor's Office of the Republic has set up an inspection in connection with the petrol station fire to establish the circumstances of the incident.
