Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has achieved a remarkable milestone, spending 1,000 days in space, setting a new world record for five flights to the International Space Station (ISS), the press service of Roscosmos said on Wednesday.
Footage shows the head of the state corporation, Yuri Borisov, congratulating the cosmonaut for this monumental achievement.
"My sincerest congratulations, Oleg, because this is a really big achievement - 1,000 days in space, and there will be more, and I think this record will hold for a long time ahead. It's a really great achievement. My sincere congratulations. I hope that the others will follow the same path and catch up," said the head of the state corporation.
Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub arrived at the ISS on the Soyuz MS-24 manned spacecraft in September 2023. Additionally, Alexander Grebenkin joined the ISS as part of an international crew on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on March 4, 2024.
On February 4, 2024, Kononenko surpassed his compatriot Gennady Padalka's record of 878 days in space, establishing himself as the world leader in the total duration of stay in orbit.
Roscosmos also mentioned that by the end of his annual mission scheduled for September 23, 2024, Kononenko will have spent 1,110 days in space.
Following his first expedition to the ISS in April 2008, Oleg Kononenko was honoured with the title of Hero of the Russian Federation and pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, signifying recognition for his contributions to space exploration.
