Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow would want to unite the efforts of 'influential external players' to resolve the conflict in Sudan, speaking at a meeting with Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Deputy Chair Malik Agar on the sidelines of the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.

"We are primarily concerned to end the conflict as soon as possible and return to the national dialogue. We are ready to assist this in every way," Lavrov said, adding: "There are now influential external players that are working out of sync. We would like to bring their efforts to a common denominator to prevent some or other forces inside Sudan from being tempted to continue the conflict.

For his part, Agar emphasised that Sudan 'understands the importance' of contacts between Moscow and Khartoum and was 'interested in strengthening long-standing friendly relations with Russia'.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in April 2023 over the country's direction, the integration of the RSF into the army, and the planned transition to civilian rule.

The fighting has forced more than 8 million people to leave their homes, including 1.8 million outside the country, making Sudan the most displaced country in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

SPIEF 2024, taking place from June 5-8, includes participants from over 136 countries. Since its inception in 1997, the forum has served as a platform for international dialogue on economic matters, with the patronage and participation of the Russian Federation's president since 2005.
