Russian Ambassador to the Central African Republic Aleksandr Bikantov stated that Moscow is taking a 'leading role' in the African country's armed forces development, in an interview with media in Bangui on Wednesday.

"The main thing is [that] Russia is participating in the construction of the CAR's armed forces, and not just participating, but taking a leading role. <...> First of all, it is the creation of an organisational basis for modern armed forces. Second, it is the equipment, starting from light small arms and ending with more advanced equipment, in particular aviation, all of which is supplied by Russia. <...> Without Russia, the issue of building the armed forces would not have been solved," the diplomat said.

According to Bikantov, Russia provided assistance during the 'invasion of illegal armed groups on the capital', preventing its 'seizure' and 'dismantling of the government' in CAR.

"The main outcome is that the Government of the Central African Republic controls almost 95 percent of the territory. <...> Generally speaking, it is, of course, assistance in ensuring sovereignty, territorial integrity, establishment of law and order and security both for citizens and for the functioning of the economy and the state in general at all levels," the ambassador added.

The diplomat noted Russia's growing role in CAR's educational sphere, with the government taking steps to include the Russian language in the country's compulsory education programme.
