Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence that relations between Russia and Iran would develop 'as progressively' as they did under the leadership of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, at a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on the sidelines of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St Petersburg on Thursday.

"Relations between our countries are developing very successfully. Just recently, presidential elections were held in your country. I would like to express my hope and have no doubt that relations between Iran and Russia will develop as progressively as it was under [the leadership of] Mr Raisi, whose death we all regret and mourn," Putin said.

The Russian leader also praised Iranian participation in the event, saying that the two countries had 'jointly organised' Iran's accession to BRICS.

In turn, Ghalibaf said that the newly elected government of his country would develop co-operation with Russia 'at the same pace', adding that they would continue to 'further strengthen' their bilateral relations.

"I would like to assure you, as well as my Russian colleagues, that both Iranian parliament and Iranian new government will continue to develop co-operation with the Russian Federation at the same pace at which it has previously proceeded," he said.

"I can confidently tell you that there is not the slightest doubt that we will continue to further strengthen our bilateral relations," Ghalibaf continued.

On Saturday, reformist Masoud Pezeshkian was confirmed the winner of the presidential election run-off, defeating conservative Saeed Jalili. Putin congratulated Pezeshkian on his victory.

The snap election was held one year ahead of schedule after President Raisi and other officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, died in a helicopter crash in the country's northwestern mountains on May 19.

At the time, the Russian leader expressed his condolences to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and said he would "always cherish the fond memories of this wonderful man".

The 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum takes place in St Petersburg from July 11-12, with delegations from 17 countries participating. According to organisers, parliamentarians are discussing ways to improve the efficiency of international relations, counter any fragmentation of multilateral trade, address the consequences of global crises, and enhance co-operation in humanitarian and cultural spheres.
