President To Lam said that Vietnam and Russia would fight new and existing challenges together, during talks with Vladimir Putin in Hanoi on Thursday.

"We… committed to jointly seek solutions to the challenges posed by the global situation, to increase trade and bilateral investment. <…> We will also ramp up defence and security co-operation. Together, we will tackle new and traditional global challenges in compliance with international law," To Lam noted.

For his part, Putin stressed that Russia and Vietnam would continue to work together.

"Our countries firmly uphold the principles of the rule of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference in the domestic affairs of other states. We co-ordinate our efforts at key multilateral platforms, including the UN, as well as within the framework of the Russia-Asean dialogue and at East Asian summits," Putin said.

Putin arrived in Vietnam at the invitation of Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the country’s Communist Party. The Russian leader is also holding talks with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chair Tran Thanh Man.

The last time the Russian president travelled to the republic was in 2017, when he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Da Nang.

Earlier, Putin visited Pyongyang and held talks with DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) leader Kim Jong-un.
