Brazil's Ambassador to Russia, Baena Soares, said that Moscow is fully capable of successfully integrating new BRICS members into the bloc while speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the Chairs of Committees on International Affairs of BRICS Parliaments meeting on Thursday.

"We think that during the Russian presidency [of BRICS 2024] we will tackle many important issues for members. First is to get on board the new members of BRICS to have extended version of BRICS, a new dynamic in the group," he said, "We are sure that the Russian presidency will be able to get them on board in a very effective manner."

In turn, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa's National Assembly, Supra Mahumapelo, stressed the increasing importance of the Global South in the international arena.

"[We doubt] anybody in the world can ignore Global South, because of its size, because of its growth, its strategic objective. So, we think that we need to strengthen the Global South because for humanity to prosper, we need that interaction all over the world," Mahumapelo said.

The meeting of the Chairs of Committees on International Affairs of BRICS Parliaments brought together representatives of Russia, Brazil, China, India, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.

The participants discussed the agenda of the upcoming X BRICS Parliamentary Forum to be held in St. Petersburg from 11 to 12 July 2024.

On September 20 2023, at a meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York, the BRICS foreign ministers supported Russia's chairmanship in the association in 2024. Previously, Moscow chaired BRICS in 2009, 2015 and 2020.

BRICS has undergone two expansions since its foundation in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the group, which included Brazil, Russia, India and China. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia officially joined the association in accordance with the decisions made during the August 2023 BRICS summit in Johannesburg.
